REAL NEWS ROADMAP
3 Communication Protocols for 3 Community Relations
JUEUN JEON
This project is about helping immigrant seniors to avoid misinformation they may encounter on social media. Despite the efforts tech companies have made to distinguish misinformation, non-English misinformation is not detected enough by existing filters and controls, which leaves immigrant seniors more vulnerable to non-English misinformation. This project aims to empower immigrant seniors by helping them distinguish fake news from authentic and reputable sources on a daily basis.
The project showcases multiple mediums and each medium delivers the same message, which is to: Wait, Check, and Ask.
Wait: wait until you calm down.
Check: check from multiple sources.
Ask: ask people you trust.
These messages are the attitude that someone can possess to be able to distinguish fake news from authentic news. They are designed to be simple, manageable, and catchy and are distributed in the form of a zine, a video, and a card game. It was important that the mediums are something immigrant seniors are comfortable and familiar with.
Zine: this explains the message accompanied by illustrations. Users can easily refer to them when necessary.
Video: The video shows the three messages accompanied by animation. Users can access them via platforms such as Youtube, which was one of the most commonly used platforms that immigrant seniors were comfortable with.
Card Game: The mechanics of the card games are based on the “wait, check, and ask” system. By playing the card game, people can easily learn the message and mindset on tackling misinformation.
